There's a lot of VPN providers out there. Some are free, some are for a fee, some report to the government, some inject ads on the websites you visit, some are in other countries, you might not have any real promise of security when using these services.

How do you go about shopping for a VPN provider that won't just sell or give away your data? What criteria should I use? Is setting up my own VPN through a web host somewhere a more secure option?

Sometimes I connect to internet using a VPN connection to be able to access the blocked websites. I've got a few questions regarding this:

1. Are my important data (like my credentials) vulnerable to be eavesdropped on the VPN server? What if the protocol of web site I am connecting to is HTTPS? (like gmail)

2. Is the owner of VPN server able to access anything on my computer (files and folders) via this connection?

3. If the answer to any of the above questions is Yes, is there any counter measures to prevent it?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Which VPN service would you recommend for start cable user?

I would use it for both netflix, hulu and downloading, etc.

Lowest latency possible.

If you can post some tests to google, dslreports, microsoft, etc, whatever you prefer (while connected to vpn).

Please advise.
